Concepts of Music Harmony & Counterpoint

Eras of Music

  • Baroque Era 1600 - 1750 ~ After the Renaissance, the Baroque Period began the charactaristics of the structure of harmony which followed several hundred years thereafter. The original meaning of "baroque" is "irregular pearl", a strikingly fitting characterization of the architecture of this period; later, the name came to be applied also to its music.[1]
  • Classical Era 1750 - 1825 ~ With beauty and grandeur in mind, the era of chamber music began. Originating in the cultural arena of Vienna, the harmonies were consisting of composers such as Haydn and Mozart.
  • Romantic Era 1825 - 1900 ~ Before the French Revolution, musicians turned to art, nature and emotions as a way of creating harmonies. Structure of compositional rules expanded greatly.
  • 20th Century Era 1900 - Present ~ With a deviation from the norms of prior music genres, twentieth-century composers intended to shock and alter music into forms unknown to previous rules and concepts of harmony.

Another noteworthy 20th Century medium which deserves great attention is Jazz and Rock harmonies. Jazz and Rock sought to change the nature of existing melody and chord structures into a whole new level. Harmony in Jazz or Rock became experiments in new tonality and structured melodies with their own rules and formation of tonality. For more information on Jazz, please check out: Top 100 Jazz CD's
